Over 19 million children not registered in Nigeria

The Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF, Sharon Oladiji, said this in Kano at a 2-day media dialogue organised by UNICEF for stakeholders, media and health personals across the 19 Northern states. According to her, among the 10 countries, with the largest number of unregistered children, India has the most by a wide margin of 71 million while Nigeria follow with 17 million. “10 countries will also contribute massively to the region’s immense population increase in absolute terms between 2015 and 2050. Shocking! Woman sells own new born baby for N500, 000

A housewife, Chinasa Ukaonu, has rekindled the flourishing baby trafficking otherwise known as baby factory in Imo State as she willingly sold her own baby after delivery for N500, 000. According to the State Police Commissioner, Rabiu Ladodo who disclosed this to newsmen through his Public Relation Officer Orlando Ikeokwu, Ukaonu had left her matrimonial home with an 8- month-old pregnancy informing her husband , Promise Ukaonu, that she was going to stay with her brother for a while at Mbaitoli. Few days after she left the house, the CP said, she sent a message across to her husband informing him that she lost the pregnancy. The Enugu State Police Command has directed for a full scale investigation into the alleged murder of a woman in her farm in Emene community near Enugu. Commissioner of Police, Mr Sulaiman Balarabe, gave the directive in a statement by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu in Enugu on Friday. Report anybody with gunshot injuries - Police charges hospitals

The Ogun State Police Command has appealed to hospitals operating in the state and other neighbouring states to report any patient with bullet injuries to the nearest police station. The command in a statement signed by its Spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said some suspected kidnappers had escaped with bullet injuries after engaging the police in a gun duel to release their colleagues who DAILY POST reported were nabbed yesterday at Ode Omi, a border town between Lagos and Ogun Waterside. A commercial motorcyclist has reportedly raped his landlady to death in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state capital. The shocking incident occurred on Thursday at Olorunda area of the state. It was gathered that the mother of three, described by family member as a middle-aged woman, was at home alone after her husband had gone to work while the children were said to have gone for holiday coaching when the incident happened. Self stigma more destructive than HIV/AIDS - CSO warns

By Ikenna Osuoha The Coalition of Civil Society Network on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (COCSNHAN) on Wednesday said that self-stigma was more destructive to people living with HIV than the disease. Mr Ikenna Nwakamma, first Co-chairman of the society, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that it was the major reason people living with HIV default from treatments. Nwakamma, who called for the incorporation of mental health services in the national HIV programme, said it was imperative to rescue patients from the dangers of self-stigma. “Very important, the issues of self-stigma is hardly talked about and that is even more destructive; it is the major reason people living with HIV default in their treatment,” he said. The society’s co-chairman explained that mental health would make people living with HIV become co-managers of their health.
