INEC Promises Insurance Package For Corps Members On Election Duties

The Independent National Electoral Commission has promised a robust insurance package for any Corps Member that suffers permanent disability during the forthcoming General Elections. Enugu State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Emeka Ononamadu stated this today while addressing Corps Members in Enugu after the Director-General, Major General Suleiman Kazaure sensitized them on their responsibilities as ad-hoc staff. The INEC REC said Corps Members would coordinate the 4,146 polling centres as polling officers across the 17 Local Government Areas of the State. He said though Enugu State does not have a record of election violence, but added that security agencies have promised to protect Corps Members and other electoral officials. Femi Falana React To Onnoghen's Suspension, Blasts NBA

Human rights attorney, Femi Falana, says it is “unfortunate that the Bar and the Bench have played into the hands of the sponsors of incipient fascism” in Nigeria in reaction to the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). Chelsea’s Nigeria star Victor Moses has joined Fenerbahce on a one-and-a-half-year loan deal. Moses agreed to make the switch to the Turkish club after falling out of favour under Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has reacted to the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, by President Muhammadu Buhari. Explaining his reason, the President said he suspended Onnoghen, following an order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, asking him to wield the big stick. Reacting, Kanu said Onnoghen’s suspension should unite those who believed in the struggle for the actualisation of Biafra. Kanu, while describing the development as humiliation of Onnoghen, said Fulani cabal must not be allowed to conquer the South East. President Buhari Swears In Ibrahim Tanko As The Acting CJN

President Muhammadu Buhari has suspended the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. Following the suspension, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed has been appointed as the acting CJN. According to the president, the development is based on the request of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, pending the completion of Onnoghen’s trial. Justice Tanko Mohammed who hails from Bauchi State is the most senior justice of the Supreme Court. Justice Onnoghen is being tried over allegations of failing to declare his assets. At the seating on Tuesday (January 22), the Federal Government had applied for him (the CJN) to step aside. The Counsel to the government, Mr Aliu Umar, informed the tribunal that the application asking him to step aside was not aimed at removing him as the CJN and Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC). Chelsea Signs Higuain On Loan

Chelsea have confirmed that Gonzalo Higuain has joined the club from Juventus on an initial loan deal with an option to buy this summer. Higuain joins the Blues after spending the first half of the campaign on loan at AC Milan, where he scored eight goals. The forward now moves to Chelsea on loan, although the club has an option to buy for £31.6 million ($41m), Juventus confirmed . Juventus also confirmed that there is an option to extend the duration of the loan until June 2020 for a fee of £15.7 million ($20.5m). With the timing of the move, the Argentine is not eligible to feature against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday. Presidential Election: We Have No Preferred Candidate – CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) says it has no preferred candidate in the presidential election scheduled to hold in February. National Council Of State Approves N27,000 As New Minimum Wage

The National Council of State has approved N27,000 as the minimum wage for the country. The council approved the amount at its meeting in Abuja on Tuesday. Following the Council’s approval, a minimum wage bill is expected to be sent to the National Assembly on Wednesday. According to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, the Federal Government is topping the approved amount by N3,000 to 30,000 for its workers. He said the states are at liberty to augment the new agreement as they see fit. Although there are exemptions, private and public organisations employing less than 25 workers are bounded by the N18,000 minimum wage. The Council, however, set N27,000 as the new benchmark that any lowest paid worker (that is Grade Level 1 Step 1) would get. The amount approved by the Council of State is N3,000 short of the N30,000 that the Tripartite Committee on Review of National Minimum Wage recommended. The committee, chaired by a former Head of
